Get Your Home Winter-Ready: A Central Heating Checklist

27 June 20265 min read

Boilers fail most often on the first really cold day of the year, when they are suddenly working hard after months off. A few checks now save a cold, expensive emergency later — and if anything needs doing, our Gas Safe engineers can sort it.

Test the heating early

Do not wait for the first frost. Fire up the heating for half an hour on a mild day so you have time to fix any problems before you actually need it. Listen for unusual noises and check every radiator heats up fully.

Bleed radiators and check pressure

Bleed any radiators that are cold at the top (our how-to guide shows you how), then check the boiler pressure reads 1–1.5 bar cold. If it keeps dropping, read up on why boilers lose pressure.

Protect the condensate pipe

Condensing boilers have a plastic condensate pipe that often runs outside. In freezing weather it can freeze and shut the boiler down — one of the most common winter callouts. If yours is exposed, lagging it with foam pipe insulation is a cheap bit of insurance.

Book a service before the rush

An annual service is the single best thing you can do for reliability, efficiency and warranty cover. Autumn slots fill up fast, so book early. See what a service includes in our boiler servicing guide, or get a fixed price for a new boiler if yours is on its last legs.

Quick questions

When should I service my boiler?

Late summer or early autumn is ideal — your boiler gets a clean bill of health before the heavy-use months, and you avoid the winter rush.

How do I stop my condensate pipe freezing?

Insulate any external run with weatherproof foam lagging. If it does freeze, gently warming the pipe with a hot water bottle or warm (not boiling) water usually clears it.

My heating worked fine last winter — do I still need a service?

Yes. A service is preventative: it catches wear and small faults you cannot see, keeps efficiency up and, on most boilers, is required to keep the warranty valid.
